Freeze - Born to break

Freeze - Born to break - Zenzai

Some sneakers start with a technical drawing.

Others start with a feeling.

With the Zenzai Freeze, it was definitely the second one.

Before there were sketches, materials or colour samples, there were images in our heads: boomboxes on the pavement. Cardboard on the ground. Tracksuits. Windbreakers. People spinning, jumping and somehow convincing gravity to take a few minutes off.

The early Eighties were loud, raw, creative and wonderfully free.

And we wanted to put some of that energy into a sneaker.

It started with a cardboard box

For us, breakdancing was never just about the look.

It was a culture that managed to create something huge from very little.

You didn't need a massive budget, a fancy studio or a perfectly curated social media presence.

You needed a beat.

Some friends.

And a piece of floor.

The rest was personality.

We loved that DIY spirit.

Because when you look at old photographs from the early days of hip-hop and breaking, it's obviously about clothes too. The sneakers mattered. The laces mattered. The tracksuits definitely mattered.

But underneath all of that was something much bigger.

Attitude.

Doing your own thing.

Creating something where there wasn't anything before.

At some point we knew: if we were going to make a Zenzai sneaker inspired by that era, it couldn't simply look retro.

It had to carry some of that attitude too.

No costume party

Retro can get dangerous pretty quickly.

Freeze was never supposed to feel like a costume.

Instead, we looked at the shapes, proportions and details of the time and tried to translate them into something you would genuinely want to wear today.

A bit old school.

A bit street.

A little bit “I may have been listening to Afrika Bambaataa five minutes ago”, without requiring you to enter a breakdance battle afterwards.

Although if that's your thing, please don't let us stop you.

Bit by bit, the silhouette of Freeze started to take shape.

Clearly inspired by the past.

But definitely not designed for a museum.

Why “Freeze”?

If you know breaking, you know the moment.

Everything is moving.

The music is running.

The body is spinning.

And suddenly:

Nothing.

Freeze.

For a second, all that movement turns into complete control.

We loved that contrast.

Movement and stillness.

Energy and calm.

And somehow, it felt very Zenzai.

We like things with personality that don't have to scream for attention all the time. Things that stand out but still feel relaxed.

So at some point, the name Freeze just appeared.

After that, no other name really had a chance.

The 80s were fun. The materials weren’t always.

As much as we love the Eighties, we never wanted to simply recreate an Eighties sneaker.

Because some things can – and should – be done differently today.

Materials are one of them.

At Zenzai, we try to use natural materials wherever they make sense. Our sneakers are made in Portugal and consist to a very high degree of natural materials.

That philosophy was an important part of developing Freeze too.

Because for us, it doesn't make much sense to celebrate the past while completely ignoring the future.

So we took the aesthetic and energy we loved from back then and combined it with the way we believe a sneaker should be developed today.

Retro, yes.

Retro thinking, no.

From memories to a sneaker

In the end, developing Freeze was a very Zenzai process.

We collected images.

Music.

Movie scenes.

Colours.

Old sneakers.

Memories.

We played with shapes and proportions.

We rejected ideas.

Then brought some of them back.

We changed tiny details that probably nobody outside our team will ever realise were changed.

And yes, artificial intelligence was part of the process too.

Not as some magical button labelled MAKE COOL SNEAKER.

Unfortunately.

Instead, we used AI as another creative tool: to visualise ideas faster, explore variations and push concepts further.

But in the end, every version had to answer one very simple question:

Would we actually wear this?

With Freeze, eventually the answer became pretty obvious.

Yes.

Made for today. Inspired by back then.

Freeze is our little tribute to a time when street culture was actually created on the street.

To breaking.

To early hip-hop.

To boomboxes, mixtapes and sneakers that weren't afraid to have personality.

But Freeze isn't a sneaker only for people who were there in 1983.

And you definitely don't have to know the names of every legendary Bronx breakdance crew to wear it.

It's for anyone who likes that energy.

The idea of doing things a little differently.

Not following every trend.

And maybe it's simply for people who want to wear a damn good retro sneaker.

Sometimes the story doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

Turn up the music.

Find your spot.

And Freeze.
